Today we are going to study countable an uncountable nouns. But first, let’s learn some words.

Grammar: COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Countable nouns

Los sustantivos contables se refieren a elementos que, como su nombre lo indica, se pueden contar. Los sustantivos contables pueden ser singulares y plurales.

• There is an apple in the fridge.
• There are two apples in the fridge.

Uncountable nouns

Los sustantivos incontables son sustantivos que están en un estado o cantidad que es imposible contar; Los líquidos son incontables (milk, water), y las sustancias también lo son (flour, sugar)

Son sustancias que no podemos dividir en elementos separados. No podemos “contarlos”. Por ejemplo, no podemos contar “leche”. No podemos expresar “compraré dos leches”. Podemos decir “compraré dos botellas de leche” o “compraré dos litros de leche”.

Los sustantivos incontables se expresan en singular. Utilizamos un verbo singular.

• There is milk in the fridge.

No utilizamos el artículo indefinido a / an con sustantivos incontables. No podemos decir “a water”. 

Existen algunos sustantivos que suelen confundirnos porque en español son incontables y en ingles son incontables. Por ejemplo:

Uncountable nouns:

•       cheese
•       bread
•       chocolate
•       meat
•       butter
•       cereal
•       jam (mermelada)
