Hello there!
Today we are going to learn the difference between possessive adjectives (determiners) and possessive pronouns.
Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns indicate possession or ownership. (Indican posesión o pertenencia)
But first let’s remember how to use the possessive adjectives
My
|
Mío / mía / míos / mías
|
Your
|
Tuyo / tuya / tuyos /
tuyas
|
His / her / its
|
Suyo / suya / suyos /
suyas (de él, de ella, de ello)
|
Our
|
Nuestro / nuestra /
nuestros / nuestras
|
Your
|
Vuestro / vuestra /
vuestros / vuestras
|
Their
|
Suyo / suya / suyos /
suyas (de ellos / ellas)
|
Tienen
que ir siempre acompañados de un nombre, por lo tanto, siempre irán antes
de un sustantivo.
Example: My car
Now it’s time to know when and how to use possessive pronouns.
Sustituyen al sustantivo
y al adjetivo posesivo que lo acompaña cuando este sustantivo ha
sido ya anteriormente mencionado, o cuando por el contexto queda
perfectamente definido:
Mine
|
Mío / mía / míos / mías
|
Yours
|
Tuyo / tuya / tuyos /
tuyas
|
His / hers
|
Suyo / suya / suyos /
suyas (de él, de ella, de ello)
|
Ours
|
Nuestro / nuestra /
nuestros / nuestras
|
Yours
|
Vuestro / vuestra /
vuestros / vuestras
|
Theirs
|
Suyo / suya / suyos /
suyas (de ellos / ellas)
|
For example:
This
is my car
|
possessive
adjective
|
Este
es mi coche
|
This
is mine
|
possessive
pronoun
|
Este
es el mío
|
This
is our house
|
Possessive
adjective
|
Esta
es nuestra casa
|
This
is ours
|
Possessive
pronoun
|
Este
es la nuestra
|
Those
are their books
|
Possessive
adjective
|
Esos
son sus libros
|
Those
are theirs
|
Possessive
pronoun
|
Esos
son los suyos
|
Los
pronombres posesivos nunca irán acompañando a un sustantivo, sino que aparecerán
solos, delante o detrás del verbo.
This book is mine (Este libro es mio)
A: My house is very big (Mi casa es muy grande)
A: My house is very big (Mi casa es muy grande)
B: Mine is bigger (La mía es más grande)
Let’s watch a video!
You will find a useful explanation about this
topic in this video.
Important:
→No existe pronombre
posesivo para it.
→Cuidado con la traducción.
En español utilizamos el artículo el/la/los/las míos/as, tuyos/as, etc. En
inglés, nunca se pone el
artículo the delante.
Mine is
bigger ✓ The mine is bigger
→Cuidado con his y hers.
En inglés tenemos que diferenciar entre masculino y femenino.
A: My house is very big.
B: His is bigger. (su casa
-de él- es más grande) / Hers is bigger. (su casa -de
ella- es más grande)
Ejemplos:
Is this Peter's Jacket? Yes, I think it's his.
(¿Es esta la chaqueta de Peter? Sí, creo que es la suya)
These books are mine.
(Estos libros son míos)
Jack and Peter came home yesterday. These umbrellas must be theirs.
(Jack y Peter vinieron ayer a casa. Estos paragüas deben ser suyos)
My smartphone is fast but yours is faster.
(Mi smartphone is rápido pero el tuyo es más rápido)
Is this Peter's Jacket? Yes, I think it's his.
(¿Es esta la chaqueta de Peter? Sí, creo que es la suya)
These books are mine.
(Estos libros son míos)
